(Note: I found this not hard to do at all.installed the OMAR installer file and then manually installed the update). I downloaded and installed Litestep on my system. the interface to configure this better is opaque to me.seems made for people who like messing around with stuff. can't lasso anything on my desktop anymore, shortcuts for program icons are broken (including thoe one for starting reaper!!). I tried this litestep thing, just installed it like you described, technogremlin.īut sorry, i don't like it. I think I will post a 'Litestep for Reaperites' tutorial soon ) Litestep however has a 'recycle Litestep' option that simply unloads and reloads Litestep on top of the OS.

Most crashes under windows are explorer (the desktop) crashes but you can only reload explorer by rebooting the system. One of the great things I like about Litestep is its ability to reload itself without reboot. You can still access the different items that are on the windows startmenu, like programs, quick launch, config panel (Litestep actually builds a menu for the config panel, so I never open the config panel and go straigt to the config-item I need). But this also means that you have to put in a little time to configure it to your liking (although the base-install works 'out of the box'). You loose only the familiarity with the windows taskbar because Litestep is a complete different beast where you can manipulate every little thing in it's behaviour. My experience with Litestep is that it is much lighter and even more stable then the windows desktop. How much more resource friendly are these shells? - I have found many of them, some even purporting to be lighter than Litestep, but are they significantly worth it compared to the Windows shell? Also what, if anything, do you lose? The windows desktop is actually NOT loaded when you run Litestep. You always need to reboot to switch as it is not a theme, it is actually a complete desktop. Click to switch to Litestep and reboot, the Litestep desktop will be loaded. The way it works is, you click to switch back and then reboot, the original desktop will load.

Also, uninstall is not needed, if you install Litestep it asks to put two shortcuts on your desktop to switch between Litestep and the default XP desktop. If you exit the desktop, simply rebooting will load it back up. I never realy understood that option, never use it, but you can remove the option from the menu without problems. You actually exited the Litestep desktop and ended up with a OS without a desktop loaded ) I exited Litestep, and found my taskbar and right-click menu gone! I had to reboot and uninstall to get back to windows operation again. So I thought, I'll quit back and have another go later. When there are more apps in the taskbar they automatically resize to lesser width. Yep, they stretch to give room for information.

Plus the windows in the taskbar are really wide for some reason. Again, this is set somewhere in Litestep's config files. The quick-launch bar is also completely under Litestep control, this for example makes it possible to launch two apps from one icon, one with left-click and one with right-click. There is a 'programs' entry that list the contents of the 'normal' start menu. Under Litestep, the right-click menu is the same as the start menu and is completely controled by one txt-file. My quick launch menu and right click menu were messed up too. The Display Properties dialogue box should now appear, select the Appearance tab and under Color Scheme select Royal Noir." When it has finished open Windows Explorer and navigate your way to the royalnoir folder and double-click luna.msstyles and this will install the theme.

When the file has downloaded click on it and this will open WinRar, click Extract and set the Destination Path to: c:\windows\resources\themes\royalenoir (use the Browse button then enter the Royal Noir folder name).

#WINDOWBLINDS LITESTEP RAR#

To give it a try you first have to download the compressed Rar file by clicking here, and if you haven’t got a suitable decompression utility you can download the trial version of WinRar here. It’s actually very smart, all blacks and shades of grey and it works well with most applications. This XP Theme from Microsoft is called Royale Noir (almost topical Mr Bond…) and according to its discoverer at istartedsomething it was originally developed for XP Media Centre but never used and somehow it escaped onto the net. Well, not so much lost as shelved and forgotten. Heh, I was going to post Royale Noir too! Started using it just yesterday.
